‘Tis the Season for Multiple Black Fridays

According to eMarketer, Americans are expected to spend a total of $929 billion on this year’s deals related to Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. However, this year comes with a twist – COVID-19 has transformed traditional “door-buster” Black Friday deals into month-long “BUY NOW” frenzies. How to keep yourself from being sucked into a scam? Here are some tips to keep your shopping (and your devices) safe during the holidays.

Impersonating Emails – Many hackers use emails that look they come from Best Buy, Target or Walmart. Check the email addresses carefully before responding. NEVER give out your credit card information to an unsolicited email.

Reviews – Look for genuine customer reviews of a new product to make certain it’s legitimate.

Customer Service – Is there a customer service contact number? If that email’s loaded with discount codes and coupons, be certain it also has someone you can talk to if something goes wrong.

Watch Your Bank Accounts – Now more than ever, check your bank accounts regularly for unusual activity – usually in small amounts at first. Hackers test with small denominations first before going in for a major heist.

Destroy Old Hard-Drives – If your office is converting to newer computers, make sure you safely and securely destroy your old hard drives with a NAID-Certified service like Ship n Destroy. Investing $10 to destroy your old hard-drive could save your company literally millions if a hacker captures your sensitive data.
