Can Your Own Email Hack Your Security System?

The Internet of Things strikes again… Researchers at Rapid7  recently released information concerning security breaches on two home security systems. Not only could the system be penetrated locally but also remotely by using the owner’s email address.

Fortress Security Store, which sells two branded home security setups, the entry-level S03 Wifi Security System, which starts at $130, and the more expensive S6 Titan 3G/4G WiFi Security System, starting at $250 are affected.

How to Keep Smart Devices Safe?

If an attacker knows the email address the device was setup with, they can effectively hack these devices. Here are some actions you can take to immediately thwart this attack:

  1. Change your email address – use an address a hacker wouldn’t be likely to know.
  2. Avoid using the keyfob controls at all – you can use the control panel or set it up on your mobile phone or laptop.

If you’re concerned about a security breach through your home security device, you can have it safely and securely destroy at our NAID certified facility.
