Are You Securely Trading In Your Old Devices?

How Many Smart Devices Get Traded-In?

The research from mobile device lifecycle management company MCE Systems found that on average, American households have four or more old phones in the household, or about 550 million nationwide. The study included over 3,000 respondents and revealed only 15% of new smartphones are sold as part of a trade-in, the report said.

About 42% of consumers have never traded in their devices, and of those, 66% have never even considered doing so. The average person uses their cell phone for two years before upgrading to a newer model. And the average laptop is used for three to four years before it’s replaced. That’s a lot of electronic waste accumulating in landfills each year.

Why is Storing an Old Laptop or Cellphone Risky & Dangerous?

Most electronics contain loads of information, some of it can be confidential.  A smart phone can contain as much information as a computer hard drive.  Also, the lithium ion batteries in electronic devices can be hazardous if not disposed of properly. If they’ve been damaged or have some kind of defect, they can cause devastating fires. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that there were more than 25,000 issues involving fires or overheating stemming from lithium ion batteries in a five-year period
