Another Plastics Bill Hits Congress

In recent years, the devastating effects of plastic pollution on our environment have become increasingly apparent. Not only do discarded plastics take hundreds of years to break down, they also create an immense amount of pollutants that can lead to air and water pollution. This is why the “Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act” is such an important step in eliminating single-use plastic items from our society and promoting environmental justice for all.

The introduction of the Protecting Communities from Plastics Act (PCPA) is a far-reaching and ambitious effort to tackle one of the greatest problems facing our planet today. On December 1st, Senators Cory Booker and Jeff Merkley, along with Representatives Jared Huffman and Alan Lowenthal, joined forces to introduce this groundbreaking legislation to address the global plastic crisis.

Petrochemical, plastic production and waste incineration facilities are a major source of air and water pollution. These facilities are disproportionately located in or near Black, Brown, and low-wealth communities. This means that the people living in these communities are exposed to dangerous levels of pollutants on a regular basis with no recourse for protection. The pollutants from these facilities have been linked to long-term health conditions such as cancer and respiratory illnesses.

The proposed law would drastically change the U.S. approach to plastic production and consumption. It would do this by setting stronger regulations for petrochemical plants, including a suspension of new or expanded permitting until the EPA has updated its regulations. Additionally, it would encourage a shift away from single-use plastics and create national targets for reducing plastic sources. This is an ambitious attempt to reduce environmental degradation caused by plastic production and consumption in the United States.
