It\u2019s\u00a0true if you pull a hard drive out of the water or\u00a0the\u00a0ashes from a fire,\u00a0the\u00a0likelihood\u00a0plugging\u00a0the drive in and recovering your\u00a0data\u00a0is\u00a0slim to none.\u00a0 But that doesn\u2019t mean someone\u00a0else\u00a0can\u2019t retrieve it.<\/p>\n

In computer forensic science,\u00a0data recovery and retrieval is\u00a0a main part of the job, even from\u00a0seemingly\u00a0destroyed equipment.\u00a0\u00a0Piecing data back together is what they do and data recovery can be done with some inexpensive software if the hardware\u00a0is\u00a0not too damaged or\u00a0data retrieval can potentially\u00a0cost thousands of dollars, depending upon the value of the data.\u00a0This can be good news for you\u00a0if you haven\u2019t saved your data or bad news if you foolishly\u00a0threw away the\u00a0equipment\u00a0thinking it\u2019s no good. Data\u00a0Carving<\/strong><\/h2>\n

When a hard-drive is compromised, a Computer Forensic Scientist uses Data Carving to retrieve information.\u00a0Data carving is different than data mining in that data carving searches through raw data on a hard drive without using a file system. Data carving is essential for computer forensics to find data when a hard drive\u2019s data is corrupted.<\/p>\n
